Job Title: Naval Architect – Barge & Crane-on-Barge Stability
Location: British Columbia, Canada or Washington State, USA (Hybrid or Remote Flexibility)
Company: Ratio Structural Engineering Inc.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Naval Architect to join our team with a strong focus on barge stability analysis, including projects involving crane-on-barge operations, floating heavy lifts, and marine transport engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to both design and analysis, ensuring safe and compliant execution of marine operations in coastal and inland waters.

This is a full-time position based in British Columbia or Washington State, with remote or hybrid flexibility depending on the candidate’s location and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed intact and damaged stability analyses for barges, including those supporting crane operations, heavy lifts, and marine transports.
  • Analyze and model crane-on-barge scenarios, including dynamic stability, operational envelopes, and ballast planning.
  • Develop and deliver stability booklets, crane operation manuals, and load-out/floating lift plans that meet regulatory standards (e.g., ABS, USCG, Transport Canada).
  • Use naval architecture software tools such as Maxsurf and AutoCAD to conduct hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and structural interface modeling.
  • Work closely with structural engineers to integrate marine and lifting systems, sea fastening, and temporary works for marine transports.
  • Coordinate with clients, crane operators, and regulatory agencies to support project execution and approval processes.
  • Conduct site visits and participate in on-water operations and testing when necessary.
  • Support internal QA/QC processes and contribute to continuous improvement in marine engineering practices.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience, including barge stability and crane-on-barge operations.
  • Proficiency in Maxsurf or equivalent stability software.
  • Familiarity with marine codes and regulations, including ABS, IMO, USCG, and Transport Canada.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for client interaction and documentation.

Preferred:

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (PEng or PE) in British Columbia or Washington State.
  • Experience supporting heavy lift operations, floating crane activities, or transport of large modular structures.
  • Knowledge of wave response and motion analysis techniques for floating platforms.
  • Familiarity with crane components and construction crane systems (e.g., crawler cranes, pedestal cranes, load charts, counterweights) is considered a strong asset.
  • Comfortable with occasional travel for site support, particularly along the BC and WA coasts.
