Season 3 at Woodfibre LNG: Three Piling Frames, One Complex Marine Environment

Season 3 at the Woodfibre LNG project is underway, and Ratio Structural Engineering Inc. is proud to once again be supporting our partners at Pomerleau on this landmark undertaking.

Scaling Up: Three Frames, Simultaneously

This season marks a first for the project. Three Ratio Structural Engineering designed Spudnik marine piling frames are now operating at the same time, a significant step up in scale and coordination from previous phases. Running multiple frames concurrently requires careful sequencing and close coordination between engineering and site teams, since each frame must be positioned, monitored, and adjusted independently while operating within the same constrained marine environment.

Beyond the piling frames, our team is also providing engineering support for the topside works, extending our involvement beyond the marine substructure and into the broader scope of the project.

Precision Engineering for Heavy Loads

A key part of this season's work involves the jacket hanging devices, which are currently being assembled on site. These precision engineered tools are designed to support jackets ranging from 314 to 425 tonnes each, holding them securely in position while the grout annulus is poured and the connection between jacket and pile is completed.

The margin for error on a load of this size is small. The hanging devices need to maintain alignment and bear the full weight of the jacket through the entire grouting and curing sequence, all while working within a tidal, marine setting. It is a good example of how temporary works engineering has to account not just for static loads, but for the sequencing and environmental conditions the equipment will actually operate under.
