Ratio Structural Engineering Inc. is proud to share that our work has been featured in the Summer 2026 edition of EGBC's flagship publication, Innovation magazine. Being recognized in this way is a milestone for our team, and one we do not take lightly.
The Project
The feature centers on our Woodfibre LNG Marine Piling Frame project, successfully deployed in September 2025 in Squamish, BC. The project pioneered a marine piling methodology that is globally unique, and represents a North American first in heavy civil temporary works.
Engineering the Solution
Marine piling projects in a fjord environment like Squamish present a distinct set of challenges. Tidal fluctuations, variable seabed conditions, and the logistics of working from the water all place pressure on how temporary works are designed and sequenced. Traditional approaches often rely heavily on marine barges and cranes for pile positioning, which can be costly and difficult to schedule reliably in a constrained marine window.
Our team developed an engineered piling frame that addressed these constraints directly. The frame provided a stable, repeatable reference system for pile alignment and installation, reducing reliance on conventional floating plant while maintaining the precision required for a permanent LNG facility foundation. This kind of temporary works innovation sits at the intersection of structural engineering and construction methods engineering, two disciplines that are core to how RSE approaches complex marine and heavy civil work.
The result was a methodology that had not previously been applied in this form in North America, developed and proven on a live, high consequence project.
A Partnership Built on Collaboration
A project of this complexity does not happen without the right partners. We are grateful for the collaboration with Pomerleau, whose commitment and professionalism throughout every stage of the project made this innovation possible.
Recognizing Our Team
None of this would have been possible without our exceptional project team. Congratulations to Paolo Gatta, Navpreet Singh Bharaj, P.Eng, P.E., Yosep Hania, James Lee, P.Eng., Tristan Kovero, P.Eng, and Ranjot Singh on this well earned recognition.
