Engineering Innovation at Giant Mine

At Ratio Structural Engineering, we pride ourselves on developing custom solutions that address complex challenges in the field. Our latest project, a lifting spreader frame designed specifically for large gabion mats, is set to make its debut next month at the Giant Mine site in the Northwest Territories (Canada). This project highlights our commitment to engineering excellence and sustainable practices in the mining industry.

The Challenge

The Giant Mine, with its rugged terrain and harsh environmental conditions, presents unique challenges for construction and remediation projects. Gabion mats, used extensively for erosion control and stabilization, are an integral part of the site's infrastructure. However, their size and weight require customized equipment for safe and efficient handling.

The Solution

The lifting spreader frame is a testament to our team's ingenuity and technical expertise. This frame is meticulously designed to facilitate the lifting and placement of gabion mats, ensuring both safety and efficiency, yet maintaining the weight of the frame to a minimum. Here are some key features:

  • Custom Design: Tailored specifically for the dimensions and weight of gabion mats used at Giant Mine.
  • Robust Construction: Built to withstand the harsh conditions of the Northwest Territories, ensuring longevity and reliability. J2 material specified to withstand low temperatures.
  • Safety First: Engineered with multiple safety features to protect both the operators and the integrity of the gabion mats during lifting and placement. Parking hooks to ensure all lifting points are secured during lifting of the frame while in proximity of diving operations.  
  • Efficiency: Designed to streamline operations, reducing the time and effort required to maneuver these heavy structures. Angles up to 10 DEG of inclination have been considered.

Behind the Design

Our engineering team undertook a comprehensive analysis of the site requirements and operational constraints. Collaborating closely with the project managers at Giant Mine, we ensured that the lifting spreader frame met all necessary specifications and safety standards. Modelling and simulation techniques were employed to validate the design under various load conditions, ensuring optimal performance in real-world scenarios.

Looking Ahead

The lifting spreader frame has been deployed onsite, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing remediation efforts at Giant Mine. We are excited to see our design in action, contributing to the site's sustainability goals and operational efficiency.
