Custom Lifting Tool for Heavy-Duty Foundation Piles

At Ratio Structural Engineering, we recently delivered a bespoke lifting solution to meet the demanding requirements of a challenging pile handling project.

The scope involved tubular steel foundation piles ranging from 1067 mm to 1219 mm in outside diameter, with wall thicknesses between 50 and 75 mm and lengths reaching up to 60 metres. Each pile was designed to support a load of 170 metric tons, well beyond the capacity of conventional lifting systems such as quick-release shackles.

To address these unique constraints, our engineering team developed a custom lifting tool incorporating several specialized features:

  • Precision-engineered spreader beam and lifting shoes, designed to operate within pre-installed casings with minimal clearance
  • Rotational capability for accurate alignment of piles during lifting and placement
  • Remotely operated hydraulic jacks, enabling safe and efficient engagement and release of locking pins

This purpose-built tool not only resolved key technical challenges, but also improved overall safety and efficiency during pile installation.

At Ratio Structural Engineering, we’re committed to developing practical, innovative solutions that respond to complex field conditions and the evolving demands of the construction industry.
