Congratulations to James Lee from all of us at Ratio Structural Engineering for winning the prestigious presentation competition hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Chartered Engineers Pacific (CEP) last month (May 2024)!
James' presentation, titled "Construction Engineering - Off-Shore Piling Design", captivated the audience with its in-depth exploration of an ongoing design project in Bangladesh. This project involves the use of 2.5m diameter and 90m long piles for constructing foundations for a transmission line across the Jamuna River.
His talk highlighted the extensive considerations and innovative applications of general engineering principles required in such a challenging environment. James expertly detailed the constructability, usability, safety, and affordability factors when designing all structural components necessary to tip, lift, and install marine piles. He emphasized the paramount importance of user safety in construction engineering, provided an overview of construction engineering considerations, and delved into the technical design process, including addressing fit-up issues and the longevity of moving mechanisms.
James also discussed the significance and caution needed when innovating existing engineering principles with modern design tools. His thorough and insightful presentation not only showcased his expertise but also demonstrated the innovative spirit that we at Ratio Structural Engineering pride ourselves on.
We are incredibly proud of James' achievement and look forward to seeing his continued contributions to the field of engineering. Congratulations, James!
